I’ve been writing and rewriting this post for the past two weeks. I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t put down into words our trip to Miyajima. It is a beautiful island filled with free range deer, mountain views, and delicious snacks. I was with good company and it was a pretty day. Overall, it sounds like a solid trip. Still, I couldn’t find any way to describe this place. Then I realized why, I was so hungover that morning. I just can’t write about a perfect day in Miyajima. So I guess, it’s time to be real. If you’re looking for actual information about Miyajima, I guess look at one of the many other blog posts available to you when you search Miyajima on Pinterest! This is not one of them.
The few points you need to know about Miyajima are… It’s home to tamed deer, who are starving, and will attack you for food. The most famous sight to see is the floating torii gate. During high tide, you can see people boating around it and you can walk out to it during low tide! Another main attraction is Mt. Misen. The mountain has a ropeway that cheats you most of the way up, but it’s still a considerable hike to the top from there.
The few points you need to know about me are… I get god awful stomach aches when I’m hungover. My family usually refers to a hangover as “the flu.” I am not a good hiker. Don’t get me wrong, I like to do it! I am just slow. So very slow. I hate going with anyone other than Spencer because I get so embarrassed.
Let’s talk about these cute deer first. As soon as we hopped off the ferry, they were there to check our pockets for food. These deer don’t mess around. A quick side note – We live in an area where huge hawks will fly down to steal your food, you know what to expect. You don’t expect a cute little deer to be your enemy! That’s how they get you. I, of course, had the flu and wasn’t eating anything, but our friend Jeremy got a snack on the island. Within minutes, the deer had taken him down. I made sure to get selfies with the thief.
On to this so called easy hike. “It’s mostly ropeways, Sara! You can do it easily!” No, I can’t. So many things were against me… starting with the fact that I had the flu! Or had they forgotten? Like I admitted before, I’m just not a good hiker. I can’t remember the last hike I went on. Plus I wasn’t dressed for it and I was carrying my purse. I had to beg the guys to leave me so they didn’t have to keep waiting for me. (I’m being so dramatic, lol.) My parents taught me to never give up. So I took one step after another as people who didn’t have the flu passed me. (Probably smirking.) Well, suck it nerds! After many breaks and completely covered in sweat in 40° weather… I made it to the top! Like everyone always says, the view was worth it.
Again, I’m sure there are way better posts about Miyajima out there, but this was my real experience. Sometimes you get the flu and you have to at least try to power through it.
Miyajima is just a quick train and ferry away from Hiroshima.
Hot lemonade and lemon beer. The Hiroshima area is known for their lemons!
Floating torii gate. Thanks to my husband for getting drone shots!
Made it to the top!
